Nadiv Social Justice Teaching Fellowship
“Accept my voluntary offerings, God; teach me your righteous ways.”—Psalms 119:108*
JCUA’s Nadiv Social Justice Teaching Fellowship offers a select group of 6-8 emerging Jewish social justice leaders (ages 21-30) the opportunity to learn about Judaism and social justice while also inspiring the next generation of Jewish students to develop their own social justice commitments.
Nadiv fellows participate in semiannual retreats and monthly Judaism and social justice study sessions taught by some of the leading rabbis and teachers in Chicagoland. Nadiv fellows then teach two “rounds” of JCUA’s seven-week-long“ Judaism and Urban Poverty” curriculum to middle school students in local religious schools. Nadiv Fellows earn a stipend of $1,000.

* About the name: The word “Nadiv” or “generous” comes from a root that indicates volunteerism or generosity. The Bible describes those who give, of their own free will, to the building of the mishkan or tabernacle as “n’div lev”—those whose heart moves them to give (Exodus 25 and elsewhere). In the quotation from Psalms, above, the speaker asks for a give and take relationship, offering whatever s/he is able and willing to give (nidvot pi), and asking God, in turn, to offer expanded teaching about righteousness and law. Similarly, Nadiv fellows will both learn more about Jewish approaches to justice and will give back by guiding younger students in their own journeys.
