On Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011, Cook County commissioners voted 10-5 to pass a simple, well-reasoned ordinance on immigration that would require the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency to reimburse the county if it wants to hold people in jail longer than local law allows.

This is a historic victory for Cook County taxpayers, the rule of the law, and public safety. It is also a victory for immigrant families who are still being separated by ICE in record numbers.

In addition to saving taxpayer dollars, defending the U.S. Constitution, and restoring trust between immigrants and police, the bill preserves public safety. The ordinance relies on five separate safeguards to ensure no dangerous criminal is released.

»Download a factsheet on the ordinance.

»Send an email to the Cook County commissioners thanking them for their actions.
